Second Saturday Seminar: Bees, We’ll Miss Them When They’re Gone
A morning for kids with children’s book author Marta Magellan! April’s Second Saturday Seminar is for kids of all ages. Marta Magellan, will discuss one of the main reasons for the disappearance of bees and the impact their loss would have on plants and people. Her book, Bee Catastrophe, We’ll Miss Them When They’re Gone, is one of several she has authored on pollinators, and all children in attendance will get a chance to win it in a drawing. A tour of the Garden including a sneak peek into our apiary (where we keep our beehives), led by MBBG’s Horticulture Manager and in-house beekeeper Riki, will follow.
Speaker Description Marta was born in Brazil but has lived in south Florida most of her life. She taught Composition, Creative Writing, and Survey of Children’s Literature, at Miami Dade College, where she was a full professor and adviser to the campus literary arts magazine. Her interest in both children and nature is now the focus of her writing. She has several published award-winning nonfiction books, several on pollinators such as hummingbirds, bats, dragonflies, and anole lizards. Her books have received positive reviews from Booklist, School Library Journal, Kirkus, Family Magazine, Midwest Book Review, San Francisco Book Review and others. Visit her website at
